Day 5 - Wednesday 24th July

Being clumsily blessed by an elephant – one that resides in the hallways of the local temple – is certainly not an activity that is regularly experienced in London. The sweltering heat and receiving of healing herbs made for an interesting and unique evening excursion, although the walk to the temple in bare feet, along the “main road”, was slightly disconcerting.

Students from Emanuel (Ewan, Jamie and I) begun the process of introducing Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” to the Sri Jayendra School Choir. We expected to see at least some vague recognition of the tune but found that Glee is not as popular in India as it is back home. In the coming two weeks we hope to finish the song, along with a couple of other tunes, with Hannah joining the musical maestros.

In terms of the day’s teaching, the highlight was definitely the students from fourth and fifth standard in the GKV School (with whom the school has a special connection); their attentiveness and ability to pick up new phrases quickly was absolutely amazing. Five periods of teaching a day may not sound too intense, however the rush to plan the next lesson proved relatively difficult, especially in the situations where one student is near fluent, and another cannot understand a single instruction. Hopefully the preparation will start to come more naturally after another week teaching. The Emanuel teachers assure us we are doing a brilliant job.
