Day 3 - Monday 22nd July

There was no school today as it was a public holiday in Tamil Nadu but we saw pupils going into school for some exams as we sat in the mini bus waiting to go on our day trip. We were off to some waterfalls located in a tiger reserve about two hours away. The people at the back of the bus soon realised they were in for a particularly bumpy ride.

When we reached the waterfalls, which we were allowed to go underneath, the boys stayed on the bus to change into swimming trunks but the girls had to remain in their clothes. There was a wall between two waterfalls separating us. The water was incredibly powerful and the pressure constantly threatened to push down our trousers. The women in saris surrounding us were more fortunate in avoiding that issue.

After a speedy change of clothes, we set off to grounds of a church for picnic lunch. We decided to have a give each pupil a number to save Mr Hunt counting us every time. We asked an ex-pupil of SJS, who was travelling with us for the day, to teach us the numbers 1-14 in Tamil, a process which took a rather long time.

When we returned to the school we had a break before we started finalising lesson plans for the following day. During the afternoon tea break, we were all offered a banana in addition to the usual biscuits and tea. This was an absolute treat since we'd been craving fresh fruit since Saturday. After dinner the girls were beckoned outside by Miss Fitzgibbon. We needed to learn the routines we would have to teach to 100+ girls the next day during a games session. Some struggled with this more than others, not naming any names... (Katie). Once we had finished rehearsing Mr Hunt called for an impromptu concert for the Headmistress and some of the girl boarders. Hannah also sang for them.
